Three ferry routes across the Adriatic
The main differences between the lines are where you arrive in Croatia, whether your vehicle can come along and in which season they run. The route page shows the exact departures for your date.
Ancona - Split
Ancona - Split is the overnight ferry to central Dalmatia: you leave in the evening and reach Split around eleven hours later, the next morning. SNAV and Jadrolinija share the line, and the timetable shows which operator sails on your date. Cars, motorhomes and motorbikes are carried. With SNAV you check in at least three hours before departure; with Jadrolinija the desk opens two hours beforehand. In Split you dock at the city port, a few minutes' walk from the old town.
Bari - Dubrovnik
Bari - Dubrovnik takes you to southern Croatia on Jadrolinija's car ferry. The crossing takes around eight hours, and the line runs in season. You check in two hours before departure at the port agency, with ID and, if you are bringing a vehicle, its documents. In Dubrovnik you arrive at Gruž port, from where city buses run to the old town and catamarans to Korčula and Mljet.
Venice - Istria
In summer, catamarans sail from Venice to Poreč, Rovinj and Pula. They carry foot passengers only and dock within walking distance of the old towns. Departures, terminal and tickets for these lines are on veniceferries.com.
Choosing a route by destination and how you travel
- With your car or motorhome: only Ancona - Split and Bari - Dubrovnik take vehicles. Our guide to car ferries in Croatia explains how to continue to the islands with your car.
- Istria without a car: the catamarans from Venice dock right by the old towns of Poreč, Rovinj and Pula, details in the section Venice - Istria.
- Central Dalmatia and the islands: Ancona - Split ends at the city port, a few minutes' walk from the connections to Brač, Hvar, Vis and Korčula. The lines from Split are on the ferries from Split page, and combinations of several islands in our guide to island hopping in Croatia.
- Dubrovnik and southern Dalmatia: Bari - Dubrovnik ends at Gruž, where the catamarans to Korčula and Mljet also leave.
- Outside the season: Bari - Dubrovnik and the catamarans from Venice take a break. The timetable shows which operator runs Ancona - Split on your date.
